Jimmy Wales is selling his first Wikipedia edit as an NFT
What you see displayed is what Wikipedia looked like at the moment that I set up the software. The artistic concept is to take people back to that moment when I set up the website and had to think, ‘Gosh, this is so vulnerable. Like anybody can edit. It might just destroy the whole thing, and I’ll be taken over by trolls in five minutes.’ - Jimmy Wales | Co-Founder of Wikipedia
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales is auctioning off his first Wikipedia edit as an NFT. Taking place online on Christie’s, bidding on the NFT started at $100 on December 3rd and will end in 2 days on December 15th. The current bid stands at $12,000. Wales is also auctioning off the Strawberry-colored Apple iMac he used to create Wikipedia. Proceeds from the sale will go to charity and to WT.Social, a Facebook and Twitter created by Wales.
Zoom In: The NFT will grant the winner of the auction control of a single webpage. Just like Wikipedia, the person will be able to edit that webpage to change what it says, but only for five minutes. Then it will revert to its original state, with a single entry stating “Hello, World!” The owner will also have the ability to turn off editing, and if they choose so, to shut down the webpage entirely.
