Researchers at Stanford University have developed an AI-based interface that can convert brain signals related to writing into letters on a screen. This new technology could be very beneficial for people with communication disabilities. The interface was tested with a 65-year-old paralyzed man, who was able to write text at a speed of 16 words per minute.
In the study, researchers inserted two small sensors into the outer area of the brain’s motor cortex to record signals to be translated into individual letters by a computer. This AI software was developed specifically for the patient who took part in the study, but the research team would like to build a self-calibrating interface for various patients, which would require additional investments and likely many years.
This technology could be beneficial to millions of people who cannot speak or write due to impairments.
