Apple has introduced its Self Service Repair program, allowing iPhone and Mac users to do common repairs at home. The company will sell genuine Apple replacement parts and tools along with instruction manuals for users to repair products at home rather than relying on third-party repair shops. The program will launch initially in the U.S. for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 in early 2022, followed by an expansion to additional countries and more products such as Mac computers featuring M1 chips. The program's initial phase will focus on commonly serviced parts like the iPhone display, battery, and camera.

Zoom Out: The Self Service Repair program may come in reaction to the Biden Administration and the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) focus on “right-to-repair.” In an executive order on competition, President Biden directed the FTC to consider new rules hindering “unfair anticompetitive restrictions on third-party repair or self-repair of items.”
