As the Omicron variant continues to spread across the United States, it’s highly likely that almost everybody will eventually be exposed to the strain, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert. "Omicron, with its extraordinary, unprecedented degree of efficiency of transmissibility, will ultimately find just about everybody," Dr. Fauci told J. Stephen Morrison, senior vice president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He also added that unvaccinated people would likely suffer from more severe symptoms than those vaccinated and boosted.
Daily cases in the United States currently stand at 676,874, slowing down from a peak of 894,509 just a couple of weeks ago on January 13th. Roughly 82 million Americans, about 25% of the US population, have not yet received a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Over 130,000 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 in the US, roughly twice more than a month ago. Although hospitalizations recently broke the previous record set in January 2021, COVID-19 deaths are lower than they were a year ago.
