Neuroscientists from Cambridge University are testing an AI-based system that can diagnose dementia in just one day and predict whether dementia patients will require immediate treatment or not. The system developed by Prof. Zoe Kourtzi compares brain scans of patients worried that they might have dementia with those of thousands of dementia patients. Initial tests are indicating that the system can accurately detect dementia years before any symptoms appear. Currently, a clinical trial with 500 patients is underway to evaluate the technology.

Zoom Out: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 50 million people with dementia worldwide, with 10 million new cases emerging every year. A system that can provide an early diagnosis in just one day would significantly improve patient outcomes.
