The government of El Salvador has committed to airdropping $30 worth of Bitcoin (BTC) to every adult citizen of the country. Every Salvadoran adult who downloads the government’s Bitcoin wallet app will be eligible. The news comes just a couple of weeks after the government declared the popular cryptocurrency as legal tender. While the global crypto community celebrated the move, the legislation faced opposition from the World Bank.

While the exact figures are unknown presently, Statista shows that in 2019 the population aged 15 and above was 4.72 million. So, with some quick calculations, we estimate that about $142 million worth of Bitcoin will be airdropped across the country. Thus, the influx of Salvadorans would mean a growth of 2.5% to Bitcoin’s global user base.
