During its Ignite 2021 conference last week, Microsoft unveiled Mesh, its new mixed reality platform powered by Microsoft Azure that allows users to connect and collaborate remotely from multiple devices via “shared holographic experiences".
In Mesh, people will initially appear as virtual avatars from the AltspaceVR social VR platform which Microsoft acquired back in 2017. Eventually, however, Microsoft envisions people appearing as themselves in the virtual room, which it calls 'holoportation'. Starting with the HoloLens, Mesh will be supported on all kinds of platforms like PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
